Gardens, like gardeners, evolve over time. What once served a purpose might later transform into something even more spectacular as our vision and experience grow. Recently, we embarked on the first step of transforming our west side garden from a hedge of Limelight hydrangeas into a dynamic mixed border anchored by a stunning water feature. Join us as we share the process of installing a pondless waterfall and the unexpected joy it has brought to our landscape.
Our west side garden transformation began with the removal of our Limelight hydrangea hedge. While these hydrangeas served us well for years, we've shared them with friends to make room for a new vision: an 85-foot mixed border featuring Japanese maples, evergreens, shrubs, perennials, and the stunning water feature we're focusing on today.
As gardeners evolve, their gardens naturally follow suit. This transition represents our growing interest in creating more complex, layered garden spaces with multiple points of interest throughout the seasons.
Before diving into the installation process, it's important to understand what makes a pondless waterfall unique. Unlike traditional ponds, a pondless waterfall features:
Our pondless waterfall project was expertly handled by Alan from Decker's Pondscape, Aquascape Artist of the Year, who helped us select the perfect location and design for our garden.
Selecting the right location for a water feature is crucial. We chose a spot along our west garden border for several strategic reasons:
When planning your own water feature, consider how it will interact with existing garden elements and how it might influence movement through your space. Water features are most effective when they feel like discoveries rather than obvious centerpieces.
Installing our pondless waterfall was a fascinating process that unfolded over just 24 hours. Here's how it came together:
The installation began with the placement of the reservoir components:
With the mechanics in place, the artistic work began. Alan started at the bottom, layering rocks to create natural-looking cascades:
One fascinating aspect of the installation was the use of waterfall foam—a special expanding material that seals the backs of rocks, forcing water to flow over rather than under or around the stones. This ensures the water follows the intended path while maintaining a natural appearance.
The second day involved:
The completed feature includes several thoughtful elements:
While the rocks and water create an immediate impact, the planting phase truly integrates the feature into the garden. We've already begun adding aquatic and moisture-loving plants:
Future plantings will include Japanese maples, evergreens for year-round structure, and a variety of shrubs and perennials to create a lush, layered look that complements the waterfall.
One unexpected delight has been experiencing the waterfall at different times of day. During daylight, the water catches the sun and creates a lively focal point. At night, the integrated lighting transforms the scene entirely—illuminating the cascading water and creating a magical atmosphere.
We've even added a bench from Christopher's grandmother's house nearby, creating the perfect spot to sit and enjoy the soothing sounds and beautiful views throughout the day and evening.
Our new pondless waterfall has already brought several benefits to our garden:
This waterfall installation marks just the beginning of our west side border transformation. In coming weeks, we'll be adding:
We're excited to see how this area develops as new plantings grow and mature around the waterfall, creating what we envision will become one of the most dynamic and interesting parts of our garden.
Have you considered adding a water feature to your garden? Whether you opt for a simple fountain or a more elaborate waterfall like ours, the sight and sound of moving water brings a special magic to any outdoor space.
